Imagine our Earth is like a big house, and the sun is a giant heater outside. The sun sends out warmth, called or sunlight, which travels through space and reaches our planet. Some of this warmth gets absorbed by Earth, making it cozy. But Earth also tries to send some of that warmth back out into space, like opening a window to cool down. This is called .

Here's where the magic happens: Earth has a special layer of air around it, called the , which contains certain gases. These gases are called . They let the sun's warmth in, but they're really good at catching the warmth Earth tries to send back out. They trap this heat, making our planet warmer. The name "greenhouse effect" comes from how a real greenhouse works. You know those glass houses where people grow plants, even in winter? The glass lets sunlight in, but it traps the heat inside, keeping the plants warm. Our atmosphere with its greenhouse gases works a bit like that, but not exactly the same.

A real greenhouse mainly keeps heat in by stopping warm air from escaping (like closing a door). But Earth's greenhouse effect keeps heat in by stopping the special longwave radiation from easily going back into space. It's like having a special kind of glass that only lets certain types of light through easily.

Scientists have known about this warming effect for a long, long time! A smart person named Joseph Fourier first talked about it way back in 1824. Later, in 1856, a woman named Eunice Newton Foote showed that air with more carbon dioxide gets even warmer when the sun shines on it. She was really ahead of her time!

Another scientist, John Tyndall, figured out which specific gases were good at trapping heat. He found that even a tiny bit of gases like and could make a big difference. Then, in 1901, Nils Gustaf Ekholm was the first to use the word "greenhouse" to describe this amazing effect.

She concluded that "An atmosphere of that gas would give to our earth a high temperature..."

So, what does this mean for us? Well, for a very long time, Earth's greenhouse effect was just right. It kept our planet at a comfortable temperature. But humans have been doing things like burning (like coal, oil, and gas) to power our cars and homes. This adds extra carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases to the air.

When we add more of these gases, it's like adding extra blankets to Earth. The planet gets warmer and warmer. Since the time of the Industrial Revolution, Earth has already warmed by about 1.2 °C (2.2 °F). This extra warming is what scientists call the , and it's causing .

It's not just Earth that has a greenhouse effect! Other planets in our solar system have it too. Mars, on the other hand, has a very thin atmosphere and not much water vapor, so its greenhouse effect is tiny, and it's a very cold planet. Even Saturn's moon Titan has a greenhouse effect, along with something called an "anti-greenhouse effect" from a high-up haze, which makes its surface a bit warmer than it would be otherwise.

Why does this matter?
