Most often, when people say "tractor," they are talking about a farm vehicle. These vehicles provide the power and pulling force needed to do many farm tasks. This includes preparing the soil (called ) and many other jobs.

Farm tools can be pulled behind a tractor or attached directly to it. The tractor can also provide power to these tools if they need it to operate. The word "tractor" comes from a Latin word meaning "to pull." It was first used to describe these pulling machines around 1896.

From Steam to Gasoline: Early Power for Farms

The first powered farm machines in the early 1800s were . These were steam engines on wheels. They could drive farm machinery using a flexible belt. Richard Trevithick designed an early steam engine for farms in 1812. It was used to power a machine that separated grain from stalks.

In the United States, where the soil was often drier, steam tractors were used to pull plows directly. These steam engines were used on farms until better internal combustion engines came along in the 20th century.

The first proper traction engine, in the form recognisable today, was developed in 1859 when British engineer Thomas Aveling modified a Clayton & Shuttleworth portable engine into a self-propelled one.

The Rise of Gasoline and Diesel Tractors

The first tractors powered by gasoline were built in the late 1800s. John Froelich built one in Iowa in 1892, but his company did not succeed at first. In Britain, Richard Hornsby & Sons made and sold the first tractor that ran on oil in 1896.

A British inventor named Dan Albone created the first successful lightweight gasoline powered tractor in 1901. He called it the Ivel Agricultural Motor. It was light, strong, and small. It had one front wheel and two large rear wheels, much like modern tractors. This tractor was very popular and many were sold around the world.

In the United States, Charles W. Hart and Charles H. Parr built the first successful American tractor in 1903. They made 15 of these machines. One of their early models is still displayed in a museum today.

Henry Ford later introduced the tractor in 1917. It was mass produced, meaning many were made quickly and affordably. The Fordson became incredibly popular, dominating the US market by 1923. By the 1920s, gasoline powered tractors were the standard on farms.

A common misconception is that tractors have always been powered by gasoline. In reality, they started with steam, then moved to gasoline and kerosene, and now mostly use diesel fuel. Electric tractors are also being developed.

Tractor Design and Configurations

Tractors come in different shapes and sizes, but most have two large driving wheels at the back and two smaller steerable wheels at the front. The driver sits above the rear axle, with the engine in front. Modern tractors almost always have enclosed cabs for safety and comfort.

Some tractors, especially for very wet or heavy soil, use tracks instead of wheels, like a tank. These are called "crawler" or "tracked" tractors. They offer better grip and spread their weight over a larger area. More recently, flexible rubber tracks have started to replace the older steel ones.

Four wheel drive tractors became popular in the 1960s. Some have all four wheels the same size, while others still have two large and two small wheels but with power to all of them. Very large tractors are often "articulated," meaning they bend in the middle and are steered by hydraulic cylinders.

The classic farm tractor is a simple open vehicle, with two very large driving wheels on an axle below a single seat, and the engine in front of the driver, with two steerable wheels below the engine compartment.

Connecting and Powering Tools: Hitches and PTO
